Billick's poor play calling
By the time Willis McGahee got his third carry during today's 27-13 loss to the Browns, Cleveland had already scored two touchdowns. Brian Billick refused again to call McGahee's number early and often, instead relying on an injured Steve McNair and a suspect air attack.
Billick has never been good with clock management, and ever since he found Willis McGahee in his offseason stocking, he has lost his ability to call a good game, too. The Ravens need to run the ball and play defense.
Today, McNair had 53 pass attempts. Fifty-three!
Billick couldn't even challenge a play without screwing up. The Ravens kept Jamal out of the end zone but unfortunately Billick kept the red flag in his pocket too long. Touchdown, Jamal.
McNair or Boller?
Some say Kyle Boller should be the full-time starter, and I'm not sure I would disagree. I definitely think he should have played today. McNair looked uncomfortable. But for Billick to put Boller in the lineup at halftime or later would be to admit that he was wrong, something that Billick is not capable of doing.
Yeah, McNair engineered a nice touchdown drive midway through the fourth quarter, but you can't wait until the end of the game to make things happen, especially when you're down by three touchdowns. Even if it is the Browns.
Short-term issues
As suspected, the Ravens' secondary today was Swiss cheese. Fortunately, the problems with the secondary will be alleviated with the return of Trevor Pryce, who will strengthen the pass rush and take some pressure off the defensive backs.
Long-term issues
The bad news is, though, that the Ravens' biggest problem almost certainly won't be addressed until the off-season, and even then there is no guarantee. I'm talking about Brian Billick, who has an ego that wouldn't fit inside of an NFL helmet (or "hat" if you're a sucker for this year's trendy network language).
Not everything is Billick's fault -- the defense is aging; injuries, blah blah blah -- but Billick runs the ship, and he is running it into the ground.
Billick takes too many chances when he shouldn't (throwing the ball early and often) and not enough when he should (4th and short in the red zone). As a result, the Baltimore Ravens are 2-2 after what should have been the team's easiest four-game stretch.
All of which brings me to my point...
Fire Brian Billick
It has been a great nine years, but the time has come for Billick to go.
Give defensive coordinator Rex Ryan the job instead of letting another talented assistant walk (Marvin Lewis, Jack Del Rio, Mike Nolan, Mike Singletary).
Might I be overacting? Sure. Am I in denial about Baltimore's aging defense? Probably. Should I sleep on it before calling for Billick's head? Maybe.
But that's the beauty of the blogosphere: Half of you will agree and the other half will disagree, but three weeks from now 90 percent of you will forget.

I could not agree more. Billick had his run here...let him go! Just like most leaders in the city of Baltimore, his ego is bigger than his intellect (no offence O'Malley supporters).
Willis ran hard...and should get many more touches.
Never thought I would say bring Somari Rolle back, but...can't get any worse.
The boys look old...Billick looks like a damn donkey.
At least the Steelers lost and the entire AFC North is a complete botch.
GOD ARE YOU RIGHT! I seriously think i'm going to pull out my hair...brian needs to get off his knees...I really could rant about this shit for about 30 hours, and about how we have all the tools for a super bowl---but brian is F**king us AGAIN!!! so here is my challenge to all you REAL FANS out there...i'm not so good at this internet things...but we need to get the word out....and START A PETITION....goal: 100,000 signatures....LET MOBILIZE...create a site, whatever, a friend of a friend of a friend is the son of the owner....and i know more than 1 million purple bleeders know how bad this is...IT NEEDS TO END...and might we add....(fire brian...hire REX?)....i can't say enough....i can ramble off all the horrible stats...or talk about the playoff loss to the colts I watched from prime time seats as my 21st birthday gift...and how I dont think I've cried so hard....and the face of the fans...I can't look at that again...AND RIGHT NOW....I think way too much of baltimore is looking like that...MOBILIZE AND FIRE BILLICK!!!
I totally agree with firing billick...But here is a twist bring in Bill Cowher and watch us become a more balance team...Let Cowher coach us for 4 or 5 years the let Rex Ryan take over. Cowher is a proven draft day expert and he will help us get good players especially on an aging defense...Also he doesn't have an offense that is totally offensive like billicks system. I say again...
FIRE BRIAN BILLICK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We need to fire Billick.... a coach can only live off of one super bowl ring for so long. He was supposed to be this offensive guru when he was with the vikings (or i should say Moss and Culpeper in thier better years)but he has been with the Ravens now 9 years and only once have we been in the top 10 in the NFL in offense. Why have we held on to an offensive coach for so long on a team whos strength has always been defense. We would be better with Ray Lewis calling plays on offense, hell we would be better with me calling plays on offense. It would look something like this: run the ball, run the ball, MAYBE throw the ball, run the ball some more. Our offense looks like some kind of deformed west coast offense. 30 passes of less then 5 yards, none over 20. This is how Billick expects to win? Also, why is McNair still starting (or playing for that matter, isn't he like 40???)Kyle Boller has shown he has matured since McNair came to town and who has the stronger arm and quicker release has never been in question. All these things acombined with the dissention showing on the team with Ray Lewis coming out and blasting the coach makes me believe it is time for a change.
Someone please bring in a coach who can get something out of this offense while we still have a dominant defense to couple it with.
FIRE BRIAN BILLICK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I can't take it anymore. Even when we have momentum, Brian calls the wrong play. As I watch the Cinci game, and we are 2nd and goal from the 2, Brian calls a throw by McNair? Are you kidding me? YOU HAVE MCGAHEE. But no, interception. Great job Steve. To start the second, McNair fumbles ... against Pittsburgh, McNair fumbled 54 times ... hmmm ... looks like a pattern to me. I would rather go with Kyle Boller or Troy Smith (since Derek Anderson was smartly released) and try to build for next year. This is excruciating. Brian - Minnesota could use a good coach, I'm sure you could teach Adrian Peterson something ... how about a trip back to Minnesota? I know I would be ALL for it.
I think we should fire Brian Billick and give Rex Ryan the headcoaching job. We're gonna' lose him (Ryan)next year anyway if we don't. Consider this -most of the great winning coaches in the NFL today are former defensive coordinators. Dungy, Gruden, Bilichech, Marvin Lewis, Parsels the list goes on. We already have the right coach right here right now . . .
Brian Billick sucks. He has a contract and hes cocky enough to say he knows hes not going anywhere, well, Id rip it up and kick his his ass out. We need a fresh mind for the Ravens.
Well boys and girls the end of an era is upon us. Brian Billick has been fired!! NEXT? Happy New Year!
Happy dayz are hear again Billick is gone thank God!
Give Rex Ryan the job and make Mike Martz O cordinator. And promote 1 of the def assistants to D cordinator. Our identity is defense and we do not want to hire Mike martz as the head coach. He is more cocky than Billick and should not have complete control of our team. Give him the offense with Ryan and Coaches Lewis and Reed to check him.
